Visit to the Amulfed Dairy at Gandhinagar

Description
On May 2, 2025, a group of 33 enthusiastic Second and Fourth year students of B.Sc. (Hons.) Food Science and Technology from Ganpat University, accompanied by their coordinators, embarked on an educational visit to Amulfed Dairy, located near Bhat Circle in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
The group departed from the Ganpat University campus at 8:45 AM, and after a comfortable journey, arrived at the dairy premises at 10:30 AM. Upon arrival, the coordinators introduced the students to the representative from Amulfed Dairy, who would be guiding them throughout the visit. The visit commenced with an orientation session in the conference hall, where students were given an overview of the history of Amul, the establishment of the Amulfed plant, and its operational structure. It was shared that the plant is spread across 20 acres of land and plays a significant role in Amul’s dairy processing capabilities.
A short 10-minute documentary video was shown, highlighting the legacy and contributions of Amul in the Indian dairy sector. Following this, the students proceeded for a guided plant tour, observing various sections of the dairy, including processing, packaging, quality control and automated system.
The visit began with the Amulfed Dairy representative leading the group to the milk collection point, where students observed the procedures for milk reception and sampling. The representative explained how milk is collected, tested for quality, and stored before processing. The group then moved upstairs to witness the automated milk packaging process, where students were impressed by the speed and efficiency of the machines. They also had the opportunity to walk through the storage area, gaining insights into the facility’s logistics and cold chain management.
Following this, the students visited various processing units, including the buttermilk production unit, butter processing section, milk powder plant, and the Amul skimmed milk unit. The tour concluded at the curd production unit, where the automation and hygiene protocols were particularly noteworthy. Throughout the tour, students showed great enthusiasm, frequently asking questions to the Amulfed representative and engaging in active discussions. After a short five-minute break, the group resumed the tour, exploring more of the high-tech machinery and dairy processing systems, gaining valuable exposure to industrial-level dairy operations. The Amulfed Dairy visit concluded at 12:20 PM after an insightful tour of its advanced processing units. The group of students reached the campus safely at 2:40 PM.
Outcomes of the visit:
1. Students gained firsthand exposure to large-scale dairy processing, packaging and automation technologies of milk and its product.
2. The visit encouraged active learning through interaction with industry professionals and observation of real-time operations.
3. It helped connect classroom concepts with practical applications in milk and milk product processing.
